Brad Plumer of the Washington Post examines how the U.S. population could change under immigration reform. He argues and addresses three main topics: (1) The U.S. population of illegal immigrants in 2018 would shrink from roughly 14 million to about 5.5 million; (2) An additional 5 million legal immigrants would enter the United States over the next five years; and, (3) Legal immigration will continue to expand in the future — with high-skilled immigrants making up a small fraction of the total.

While our Federal government has recently rekindled after their August recess with immigration reform still on the table, some state governments have begun to address immigration independently. Reid Wilson of the Washington Post looks at the variety of immigration laws and resolutions that have passed thus far in 2013. From financial aid for college tuition, to state driver’s licenses, 43 states and the District of Columbia have made changes. Similar to Congress, there is still a divide in ideology between state Republicans and Democrats. Wilson’s article looks at those who have crossed party lines, and those sticking firmly with their beliefs.
